Although they use their own timescale, the Hijri lunar calendar, all Arab countries follow the Gregorian calendar, which is the most widely used civil calendar in the world and the one you are probably familiar with. Now to read the full date in Arabic out loud, follow this simple practice:

- Start with the phrase ( اليوم هو alyoom huuwa) meaning “today is”.

- Say the number of the date, then the month in Arabic.

- Then say في عام) Fi Aam) which means “in the year” and state the year.

The years in Arabic are read as long numbers, for example, the year 1987 is read: “Alf wa tis3atu ma’a wa sab-atu wa thamaanoonn” or “one thousand, nine hundred and eighty seven”.
